Set on seven hills overlooking the river Tejo, packed with contrasting delights and retaining its own individual character.
- The narrow streets of the ancient Alfama, the busy “Baixa” with its long and wide roads and superb squares, the castle, the churches and monasteries and the superb waterfront all bare witness to the city’s golden historic period – the Portuguese Discoveries.
- Fine museums and the style buzz of the “Parque das Nações” provide the perfect foil.
- Along the river Tejo to “Parque das Nações” a modern and stunning waterside site with dazzling modern architecture.
- Free time in Belém District to lunch and to visit Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and Monument of Discoveries.
- We will take you to downtown (“Baixa”) driving through “Bairro Alto” built in the 16th Century, quite during the day and busy at night, seeing as the district is one of the longstanding traditional strongholds of “Fado”.
- At downtown, rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755, we’ll stop for 1 hour for shopping and visit. From “Rossio” square we’ll go to Alfama, a medieval quarter, a magic blend of historic buildings and picturesque streets, with great photo opportunities at every turn.
- At a short distance Sintra, the summer residence of the kings of Portugal, and of the Moors before them.
Set in the woody mountains with wonderful views out to sea, is a World Heritage Site with breathtaking Palaces, outstanding gardens and museums.
In Sintra, we’ll stop to visit The Royal Palace (except Wednesday-Palace closing day) and free time to walk around in the narrow streets. |
